What is Pilates? in Early 1900, “Contrology” (the original name of the Pilates Method) was created by Joseph Pilates to help aid and strengthen his own sickly body. He defined his method as “the comprehensive integration of mind, body and spirit.” 6 principles are incorporated into the Pilates method: breath, concentration, control, centering, flow and precision. Each are executed through strength of the core with an emphasis on the connection between mind and body. A strong center is key to maximize the ease and flow of each movement. Pilates allows you to build strength, improve balance, flexibility and coordination as well as lifestyle. The goal of Controlology (Pilates Method) ".....the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind and the ability to perform life's daily activities with zest and ease." - Joseph Pilates

Why Pilates? NU Pilates has been created to assist in shaping and defining the human body by using the classical Pilates mat system. Our program focuses on physical aspects of life such as better posture, increased strength and flexibility and muscle tone. Our goal is to strengthen the core because we understand the importance of a strong center.
Pilates uses six
principles to develop the connection between your mind and body. Breath - All exercises are done with a rhythm and a dynamic related to the heartbeat and respiration. We inhale clean fresh air into the lungs and muscles and exhale stale air out. Centering - All work is controlled through the center, or "powerhouse." The frame box: shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip which holds all of our major organs except the brain. This area is the center of strength and maintains balance in the body. Concentration - The mind guides the body. We center the mind with the body in action. Focus on each execution of the exercises retains maximum benefit from the workout. Control - You must be in control of the movements performed. Habit does not guide the execution of the exercises. Sloppiness offers little to no benefit.
Flow - Natural flow into
each movement syncs body to movement through breath. There is a minimum
of movement between exercises to create a maximum flow. Precision - All exercises are performed with a clear structure and precise form. The work emphasizes quality, not quantity in order to reach the full benefit of each exercise. By building and maintaining a strong foundation, every branch of life can be performed better. Nu Pilates offers the opportunity for self-improvement through dedication and hard work. We want to assist you in reinventing yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. We encourage a NU way of life.
